FRESNO, Calif. – The 35
th-ranked MSU Denver men's tennis team completed a 3-0 trip to California with a 6-1 victory Monday over Fresno Pacific, while the Roadrunners' women suffered a closer-than-the-score-indicates 7-0 loss to the Sunbirds.
The Roadrunners' men won their sixth straight dual to improve to 10-3, with
Stephen Kossifas extending his winning streak to seven with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) victory at No. 4 singles, and
Jeanloup Auzias winning his fifth straight decision at No. 1 by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.
Alejandro Jimenez improved to 12-5 for the season and 26-10 for his career with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3, and
Juho Kantola improved to 15-4 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Earlier, the 31
st-ranked doubles team of Kantola and
David Kijak won 6-2 at No. 1, and Auzias and
Billy McDermott won 6-4 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
"The men won a tough doubles point, and they took that momentum quickly into the initial singles matches," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "Overall the guys had a solid weekend and have things to build onto in practice this week."
In the women's dual, MSU Denver dropped to 9-5.
Fresno Pacific clinched the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 victories – MSU Denver was in position to win at No. 2 with
Marie Cool and
Hanna Haber leading 5-4.
Then the Roadrunners suffered several close losses in singles, including
Isabel Heras at No. 2 (6-4, 7-5),
Kinsey Fields at No. 3 (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) and
Lilly Stienemeier at No. 5 (7-6, 4-6, 1-0).
"Today came down to execution for the ladies," Graetz said. "Doubles was tight and many of the singles matches were close. We will learn from today and use it for tomorrow's match."
The Roadrunners women have one final match on the trip, playing Tuesday at 3 p.m. MDT against Dominican (Calif.).
