DENVER – MSU Denver's bats came alive, and the defense made plays as the Roadrunners racked up 21 runs on 31 hits over the final two games of the series against Black Hills State.
"I loved how our team came out today with an attacking mentality," said MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga. "Being consistent with our energy, focus, and competitiveness is something we talked with the team about and I thought they did an awesome job of addressing those up and down our lineup."
Cheyenne Prieto picked up her sixth win of the season during the first game of the doubleheader to lead the Roadrunners to a 8-1 victory. After giving up one run on three hits in the first inning, Prieto settled in allowing only two hits and striking out seven over the next five innings.
Maddy Wilson attempted to match Prieto's effort in the second game. Wilson pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up only one hit, as MSU Denver defeated Black Hills State 13-0.
Van Wetzinga said, "We challenged our pitchers to be sharper today and they were which makes things easier on them. They executed pitches and let their defense make plays behind them."
The offense was just as impressive on Sunday. Over the two games,
Shelby Robb went a combined 6-for-8 with five RBIs. She had two singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run.
Robb was not alone in her effort. In game one,
Miah Hartvigsen,
Hannah DiFabio,
Aaliyah Arellano, and
Jenna Medhus all had multiple hits. Not to be outdone,
Kami Grammerstorf,
Katie Maney, and
Adriana Bueno each had a multi-hit game during the series finale.
"This team is fun to watch and fun to coach and I'm excited to continue to see them grow," said Van Wetzinga.
MSU Denver will return to action at The Assembly Athletic Complex on Friday and Saturday for a four-game series with Fort Lewis. First pitch on Friday is slated for noon.
