DENVER – MSU Denver continued its offensive baseball barrage Friday, racking up 35 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Regis.
The scoring explosion came after the teams played the final inning of Thursday's suspended game, which the Roadrunners ultimately won 27-21. The doubleheader victories Friday were by 18-4 and 17-12.
"It's very rare you can say that you won three games in a day," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said.
With 62 runs in three games, MSU Denver improved to 22-7 overall and 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
MSU Denver scored 80 runs in a four-game series last year at Adams State, and would need yet another high-scoring outburst to top that in Sunday's 3 p.m. series finale.
Tanner Garner, who tied the RMAC record with nine RBIs in Thursday's game, made it 11 RBIs in 11 innings with run-scoring hits in each of the first two innings of Friday's opener.
"He's been really good all year," Strain said of Garner, who is batting .475 with six homers and 30 RBIs. "And now that he's in the 2-hole, he and (leadoff hitter) Cody (Schultz) are really rolling for us and that's helped having them ahead of the middle of our order."
Everyone else joined in the fun again, too.
Cleanup hitter
Jake Williams homered in each game, extending his hitting streak to 22 games while going 5-for-8 with five RBIs.
"Even his outs were loud," Strain said. "The guys were giving him grief asking what was wrong with him when he actually popped it up one time. The guys in front of him are giving him RBI chances and he's taking advantage of it."
Ross Smith also had a five-hit day, with two doubles among his at-bats. Schultz had a triple and a homer in the opener and overall was 3-for-8 with four RBIs.
Cam Yuran homered in the opener, and
Zach Schuler homered in the nightcap.
Starting pitchers
Reichle Arcilise (3-1) and
Andrew Hayes (5-1) each pitched a workmanlike five innings while giving up four runs to pick up the victories.
Left-handers
Ryan Overboe and
Kai Inouye each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the opener in their MSU Denver deubts.
"It was good to get those guys in," Strain said. "I was very happy for both of them."
The second game was following the same track, with MSU Denver leading 17-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Regis rallied for eight runs, forcing Strain to engage the back end of his bullpen.
Zane Covey got the final out of the sixth, and closer
Eric Cox protected a five-run lead in the seventh and final inning.
"Hopefully we can go out and close things out tomorrow," Strain said.
