@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners' Men Take Down No. 16 Northwest Missouri State

Win is program's first over a ranked team since 2018

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The MSU Denver men's tennis team knocked off 16th-ranked Northwest Missouri State 4-3 on Saturday, despite playing its third dual in three days in three locations.

"I am so proud of our men today," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "To beat the No. 16 team in the country in their house takes great focus and effort from everyone involved."

It was the first win over a ranked team for the MSU Denver men since a 5-4 decision over No. 22 St. Mary's (Texas) on March 3, 2018, and is the first win against a ranked team in a true road dual since at least 2000.

Key victories included Jeanloup Auzias' 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over 33rd-ranked Andrea Zamurri as well as Stephen Kossifas' 6-2, 6-2 clincher over Jan Skerbatis at No. 5 singles.

"JL was able to beat one of the best players in the country and he was able to stay aggressive from start to finish," Graetz said. "Stephen has been the clincher for us the last two matches, and I'm so proud of how he handled himself as a freshman.

"Overall we were able to learn about ourselves this weekend and we can use that moving forward."

Both the men and the women finished the weekend with a 2-1 record.

The MSU Denver women lost 6-1 to the Bearcats on Saturday. Kambra Roles picked up the lone victory, at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).

"The ladies didn't come ready during the doubles point, and that was disappointing," Graetz said. "In singles we were beaten by a better team, but I was really happy that Kambra was able to go undefeated this weekend."

"Overall the women should be proud of the weekend and take the lessons learned into practice."
