@MSUDenverTennis: No. 31 Roadrunners Extend Streak against Colorado Mesa

Women drop incredibly close dual with Mesa before rebounding against CSU Pueblo

DENVER – The 31st-ranked MSU Denver men's tennis team sailed to another victory over Colorado Mesa on Saturday, while the Roadrunners' women bounced back after losing a dual to the Mavericks that couldn't have been any closer to cruise past CSU Pueblo.

The Roadrunners men beat Colorado Mesa 6-1 for their 13th straight win in the series, dating to 2017.

"Our men beat a tough Mesa team today," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "I thought it was maybe a little tighter than the overall score line suggested. Getting the doubles point was important and I think that gave us some extra confidence moving into singles."

The MSU Denver men improved to 11-3 for the season with a seventh straight win, earning a close doubles-point win as well as three-set wins by Alejandro Jimenez at No. 3 singles and Stephen Kossifas at No. 4.

The women's dual with Mesa was a thriller, with Mesa winning 4-3 to snap a 14-dual losing streak against MSU Denver dating to 2016.

Four of the six singles matches went beyond two sets. Mesa picked up marathon wins at No. 2 over Marie Cool by 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4), at No. 3 over Kinsey Fields by 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 and at No. 4 over Hanna Haber by 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (8).

"The women lost a tough one today," Graetz said. "Credit to Mesa. I thought they deserved it, and we need to learn how to handle tough situations better. We just didn't start well in doubles and that is unlike us. We need to quickly move on and learn from it."

Playing winless CSU Pueblo in a women's dual later Saturday, MSU Denver's top three singles players sat out as the Roadrunners (11-6) cruised to a 7-0 victory. CSU Pueblo didn't field a No. 3 doubles team nor a No. 6 singles player and managed to win just 16 of the 84 games played.
"We took care of business against Pueblo," Graetz said. "It's exactly what we needed to do after a tough loss."

Both MSU Denver teams are back in action again Sunday with 11 a.m. duals against Colorado College at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
