DENVER – MSU Denver ran into a top team Saturday and dropped a doubleheader to 12
th-ranked Colorado Christian by scores of 5-0 and 12-4.
"Defensively, and our pitching, has to be sharper when you play good teams," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "If you can't keep the ball in the park, it's going to be hard. And if you don't make plays when your pitchers give you ground balls, it's going to be tough.
"Tomorrow is a new day and I anticipate our team coming back and playing hard."
Colorado Christian improved to 43-3 overall and 33-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while MSU Denver dropped to 26-17 and 22-10.
MSU Denver was limited to
Hannah DiFabio's leadoff single in the opening game.
The Cougars scored two unearned runs off
Audrey Burt (5-9) who was solid while working 6 1/3 innings and striking out six.
In the second game, a two-run homer by
Jenna Medhus in the bottom of the third brought the Roadrunners within 4-3, but Colorado Christian answered with six runs in the top of the fourth, then threw in a triple play defensively in the fifth.
"I liked our at bats and battle in game two," Van Wetzinga said. "We know they have some tough pitchers. so you have to assume there aren't going to be a ton of scoring opportunities.
"Tomorrow hopefully we can capitalize more when we have base runners on."
The teams are set to play another doubleheader Sunday at noon at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
