DENVER – Look who is heating back up again at just the right time.
Audrey Burt and
Cheyenne Prieto combined to keep Regis scoreless,
Jaiden Geist collected her third game-winning RBI of the series, and
Jenna Medhus drove in five runs in the finale as the MSU Denver softball team completed an impressive four-game sweep at Regis on Monday, winning 5-0 and 9-0, to retake sole possession of second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Roadrunners improved to 30-19 overall and 26-12 in the RMAC while sending Regis from second place to fourth.
MSU Denver had lost 10 of its previous 12 games against teams in the top half of the RMAC before turning everything around this weekend.
"After some tough weekends where we weren't quite sharp enough, had some tough luck, and played some tough teams, I'm really proud of how our team came out this weekend," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "From the first inning of the first game, they set the tone and never let up. We played with a really good mix of confidence and competitiveness. We trusted ourselves and were able to perform to our abilities."
Burt (7-10) twirled her second consecutive complete-game victory in the opener with a six-hitter. Combined with her work Sunday, she pitched 14 innings in the series and allowed only one unearned run.
In the second game, called after five innings due to the eight-run rule, Prieto (8-4) pitched a one-hit shutout, allowing only a first-inning walk and a one-out single in the second. She retired the final 11 batters in order.
Regis scored only two runs for the series.
"Our pitchers were excellent," Van Wetzinga said. "We've been talking to them about being efficient and consistent and they took a big step this weekend in that area. They didn't try to do too much other than execute pitches and let their defense make plays. And our defense was excellent this weekend."
Geist put MSU Denver ahead to stay for the third straight game in the opener, as she cracked her second home run of the series in the second inning.
Shelby Robb was 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs, and Geist later added another RBI with a sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Medhus' two-run double started a three-run first inning, and she later added a three-run homer in the fourth. Like Geist, it was Medhus' second homer of the series, and like Geist it gave her a share of the team lead with eight.
Hannah DiFabio was 2-for-2 and scored three runs as part of the 10-hit attack.
For the series, DiFabio and Robb were both 6-for-12 and scored five runs, while Geist was 5-for-11 (.455) and Medhus was 5-for-14 with nine RBIs.
"Offensively we carried over what we did day one to day two," Van Wetzinga said. "We had clutch hits and were able to use our speed on the basepaths.
"It was a much-needed weekend and it was fun to watch them do their thing."
