@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Falls in Elimination Game at RMAC Tournament

Roadrunners scored an early run, but couldn't hold off Colorado Mesa

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – MSU Denver scored first, but Colorado Mesa rallied for two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth to eliminate the Roadrunners from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball tournament in a 6-2 decision on Saturday.

The Roadrunners, the tournament's second seed, finished third while dropping to 34-22.

"It was a tough and disappointing end to the season," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We weren't able to put enough quality at bats together, and defensively we broke down in the one inning which allowed them to blow it open."

Coming off a heartbreaking loss to the tournament's top seed and national No. 8 Colorado Christian on Friday, the Roadrunners bounced back quickly on Saturday, opening the game with three straight hits by Hannah DiFabio, Kami Grammerstorf and Shelby Robb to load the bases with no outs.

The Roadrunners went ahead on Jenna Medhus' sacrifice fly, but were unable to push another run across.

Medhus, the RMAC's Freshman of the Year, was also named to the All-Tournament team.

MSU Denver put together a seventh-inning rally, scoring once on an RBI single by Grammerstorf.

Grammerstorf was a team-best 4-for-10 for the tournament, and her first-inning stolen base gave her 31 for the season, matching the single-season school record set by Susie Oury in 2015.

"This group has a ton of potential for next year," Van Wetzinga said. "There's no doubt we have talent and are capable of big things, but we need to use the experience from this season to grow and improve individually and as a team. "Overall this team has been a joy to coach and work with this season. They work hard and they're good people."
