COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Led by
Caitlin Cornell and
Marissa Bruno, who finished 14
th and 15
th, respectively, the MSU Denver women's cross country team placed third at the four-team Ted Castaneda Classic on Saturday.
Cornell ran six kilometers in 23 minutes, 33.05 seconds, just ahead of Bruno's time of 23:43.42.
"
Caitlin Cornell had a great day," said Amana Rego, MSU Denver's associate head coach. "She's been putting in very good training and it was exciting to see it play out in a race. And I was really impressed with
Marissa Bruno. I could see this coming from workouts, but to actually execute iut in a race is impressive. She improved by over 90 seconds from our home meet. She's not afraid to take risks and run gutsy, which I love.
MSU Denver had just three competitors for the men's race and didn't count in the team standings.
Shota Yabuuchi led the way in 32
nd place, running 8K in 28:24.69.
Behind Cornell and Bruno, rounding out the scoring the for the MSU Denver women were:
Audrynn Street in 28
th place (25:02.36),
Lexi McAfee, 38
th place (26:10.86) and
Heidi Yagen, 41
st place (26:23.00).
"We had several other PRs today which shows the work is paying off," Rego said.
