GOLDEN, COLO. – A late goal by No. 1 Colorado School of Mines in the 90th minute was the difference as the Metropolitan State University of Denver women's soccer team fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners are 7-3-4 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"That was a playoff caliber game today and our team showed up ready to play," said Head Coach
Kat Mertz.
The game began with both teams attacking early. MSU Denver senior goalkeeper
Kylie Bach saved two shots on goal before allowing a header goal in the 20th minute that came off of her hands. Sophomore
Jenelle Arenibas was able to fire off two shots on goal in the following eight minutes with Mines stopping both. The first half would come to a close with the Roadrunners trailing 1-0.
The second half also saw both teams going on the offensive. Sophomore
Madrid Mack was able to get MSU Denver on the board and tie the game in the 65th minute with her third goal of the season after taking a shot following a loose ball just inside the corner of the box. The game would be back-and-forth until the final minute when Mines would score off a free kick with only seven seconds remaining.
Mertz added, "I am proud of our team effort today. We played well and had good energy. That is what makes the result disappointing."
MSU Denver will travel to Alamosa, Colo. on Thursday, October 24 to take on Adams State at 3 p.m.
