DENVER – The MSU Denver women's soccer team overcame a rarity – a goal by its opponent – with two second-half scores to defeat rival UCCS 2-1 on Sunday.
The victory was the program's first over the Mountain Lions since 2016, breaking an 0-7-1 streak against the perennial Division II power.
UCCS scored in the 13
th minute, but MSU Denver held steady and mounted a second-half surge.
At 55:53,
Sami Spring took a pass from
Elly Peterson, waited out her defender, and then lofted a right-footed shot from left to right to the upper right corner of the goal, tying the game.
Then
Tessa Killmon scored her second goal of the weekend for the game-winner at 65:22.
Emily Sirois sent a pass into the box, and MSU Denver's
Monica Yoder collided with the UCCS goalkeeper while pursuing it. The ball then deflected off the keeper's heel toward the goal, and a clearing attempt by a group of three Mountain Lions defenders was deflected by one of those UCCS players and popped in front of Killmon, who put it home.
MSU Denver, which has allowed a goal in just two games this season, improved to 5-1-4 overall and is 4-0 and in sole possession of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 12 points.
Kylie Bach had seven saves.
The Roadrunners, 4-0 in the RMAC for the first time since 2018, play host to Westminster (4-1-2, 2-0-1) on Friday at 6 p.m.
