MSU Denver holds Skyhawks to 28 percent shooting for the game

DURANGO, Colo – MSU Denver used a lighting fast start and stifling defense to defeat Fort Lewis College 65-48 to start conference play.
 
The win improved the Roadrunners to 6-1 overall with a 1-0 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks fell to 5-4 overall and to 0-1 in the RMAC. 
 
The Roadrunners started fast in this one racing out to a 12-0 lead in the first 4:43. Sophomore guard Logan Threatt had five of the 12 points. 
 
Head coach Dan Ficke's squad would push their lead to as high as 23 points, outscoring Fort Lewis 28-5 through the first 12 minutes of the first half. Seven different Roadrunners found the bottom of the net, which included eight from senior forward Caleb McGill and seven points apiece from junior guard Quave Propst-Allison and senior forward Brayden Carter
 
But the hometown Skyhawks made a late run in the final eight minutes outscoring MSU Denver 17-3 to cut their deficit to just nine points by halftime. Biko Johnson had back-to-back three-point shots to spark the rally. 
 
Johnson hit another shot from beyond the arc to cut MSU Denver's lead to just six to start the second half. 
 
But the Roadrunners would quickly turn things around and outscored the Skyhawks 34-26 in the second half to come away with the 65-48 victory. 
 
Carter scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds against his former team. Propst-Allison finished with 12 points, while adding six rebounds and five assists. McGill had a nice stat line of 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. 
 
MSU Denver's defense kept FLC off balance all game, holding them to just 28 percent shooting from the field, and 21 percent from three-point range. Fort Lewis' 48 points scored were the lowest they put up this season. 
 
The Grizzlies from Adams State is up next for Coach Ficke's squad and they will look to make it four straight wins on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
