RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Completes Four-Game Sweep Of Cowgirls

Pitching Shines In Road Wins

DENVER – The MSU Denver softball team was back in action, taking on the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands, looking to complete the four-game sweep and to start conference play a perfect 8-0. The two games today were dominated by the Roadrunners pitching staff in which both starters threw complete games, leading the Roadrunners to an 8-2 game one victory and a 5-1 victory in game two.  MSU Denver improves to 13-5 overall.

Jenna Medhus started game one for the Roadrunners going all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, not allowing a walk, and striking out one Cowgirl. Cheyenne Prieto had an even better game two performance in which she once again went all seven innings. In her seven innings of work, Prieto allowed one earned run on three hits, walked three, and struck out four Highlands batters.

"I'm really happy with our pitchers, Jenna and Cheyenne, and how they competed today," said head coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "They did a good job of executing pitches and letting the defense take care of things."

The Roadrunners bats continued to stay hot in game one, winning 8-2 and racking up thirteen hits from players up and down the lineup. Genevieve Bower (2-for-4 at the plate), Hannah DiFabio (2-for-5 at the plate), and Aaliyah Arellano (2-for-3 at the plate) were the driving forces of the Roadrunners offense as all three players had two RBIs each.

Game two was much lower in scoring, only 5-1, but the Roadrunners still had four batters that racked up multiple hits. DiFabio and Arellano both went 2-for-4 and Lexi Gephart and Kami Grammerstorf both followed suit going 2-for-3.

"We didn't hit as many balls hard today and yesterday, but we had clutch hits and timely hits, which is the most important thing to have," Van Wetzinga said.

The Roadrunners have a brief break before being in action on Wednesday, February 28 to take on Fort Hays State (Kan.) at noon for a doubleheader.
