@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Loses Two Competitive Games in Texas

Roadrunners had tying run thrown out at plate in the seventh inning of the opener

CONROE, Texas – MSU Denver suffered a pair of late-inning losses Saturday at the D2 First Pitch Invitational softball tournament.

The Roadrunners fell 3-2 to Texas A&M International in the first game of the day, then saw Angelo State (Texas) make a late push in a 7-1 defeat.

"We're putting baserunners on, but we aren't having enough productive at-bats to keep the offense going," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We need to execute at the plate and hit the ball harder more consistently."

In the opener, MSU Denver took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Hannah DiFabio, but Texas A&M International replied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

MSU Denver nearly tied it in the top of the seventh. Genevieve Bower singled and scored on Lexi Gephart's triple to center, but Gephart was thrown out at home trying to stretch it to an inside-the-park homer.

Against Angelo State, MSU Denver scored right away, as DiFabio led off the game with a double and scored on a Jaiden Geist single.

Audrey Burt, coming off a complete-game win Friday over No. 8 Texas-Tyler, was strong in the circle for four innings.

Angelo State scored two in the second but then put together a five-run fifth that included a three-run homer to break it open.

"I give Angelo credit," Van Wetzinga said. "Their hitters were aggressive and took advantage of opportunities.

"As the coach, I take the blame for the last home run, which was a back breaker for us. I should've made a pitching change. Audrey had a lot of pitches on her from the UT Tyler game and today's game combined."

Bower was 2-for-2 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

MSU Denver dropped to 1-3 in the tournament, which concludes Sunday with a 10 a.m. CST game against Texas Woman's.
