ALAMOSA, Colo. – In the wildest game in the history of MSU Denver softball, the Roadrunners defeated Adams State 38-16 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader – that's right 38-16! – completing the sweep of twinbill and a sweep of the four-game series.
MSU Denver won the opening game 13-3, with that contest stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
"Up and down the lineup our hitters did well, and we needed that today," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We found a way to win four games, and we're happy we did that."
MSU Denver improved to 33-7 overall by winning for the 29
th time in 31 games, and maintained its hold on first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 26-2. Adams State dropped to 4-33 and 2-26.
The run rule was about to come into play in the nightcap, with the Roadrunners taking a 19-7 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Adams State shockingly struck for nine runs, not only keeping the game alive but throwing a major scare into MSU Denver by pulling within 19-16.
MSU Denver responded for three runs in the sixth to make it 22-16, but not enough for the eight-run rule, and then exploded for 16 runs in the top of the seventh.
While the run total for an inning is five short of the program record, the record book will be rewritten after this one.
The combined run total of 54 is the highest in a game in program history – by 23 runs!
The previous high of 31 was in a 31-0 victory at Colorado School of Mines on April 18, 1990 – that had also stood as the most runs scored in a game by MSU Denver.
MSU Denver also had school records of 34 hits and 37 RBIs, breaking the old records of 25 and 28, respectively, both in the Mines game from 1990.
The Roadrunners tied a school record with eight doubles (it had been done only once previously, against New Mexico Highlands in the first game of a doubleheader on Feb. 24) and a school-record seven triples (the previous high of four had been done twice, the last time coming on Feb. 5, 2022 against Fort Hays State).
And their 68 total bases broke the program record of 42 set May 8, 2010, against Colorado Mesa.
The marks for runs, hits, triples, total bases and RBIs are all RMAC records – the total base mark is a new Division II record, while the triples total ties the Division II record.
Kami Grammerstorf had a program- and RMAC-record six hits and scored a program- and RMAC-record six runs (she was 6-for-6 with four RBIs),
Katie Maney had a career-high seven RBIs, one short of the program record, while going 4-for-5 and matching the old program record of five runs, and six players had three-hit games.
Grammerstorf's total of hits and runs also tied the Division II record. Prior to this season, only 11 times had a player had six hits and only 12 times had a player scored six runs.
Maney and
Miki Berg each had two triples, becoming the 12
th and 13
th players in program history to have two triples in a game, while tying the RMAC record.
Genevieve Bower was 3-for-4 with five RBIs, connecting for a grand slam in the wild seventh inning.
Only 10 times in Division II history has a team scored more than 16 runs in an inning -- including MSU Denver's national record 21 in an inning in the aforementioned game against Mines in 1990.
MSU Denver scored at least two runs in every inning.
On the career milestone chart, Grammerstorf passed Colissa Bakovich (2014-17) for sixth in MSU Denver in career runs (160). And
Shelby Robb, now in sole possession of second place on the program's career hits list (232), has passed Tara Mickelson (2009-10) for third in career RBIs (153) and is now tied for third with Bakovich in career triples (14).
After getting two in the first, the Roadrunners scored eight in the second inning, which included a three-run triple by Maney and a three-run homer by Jaden Geist, as well as a solo homer by
Alexia Boring.
In the seventh, Maney got the scoring started with a two-run homer to make it 24-16. Bower's grand slam made it 35-16.
The 16 runs scored by Adams State were the third-most ever recorded against the Roadrunners and the most against MSU Denver in a victory.
In the opener, MSU Denver led 5-1 before erupting for eight runs in the fifth. Geist was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, with two coming in the fifth.
