@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Splits Doubleheader at Fort Lewis

Roadrunners erupt for seven runs in third inning of opener

DURANGO, Colo. – MSU Denver extended its softball winning streak to nine games Sunday by winning the opening game of a doubleheader at Fort Lewis 9-2 before the hosts came back to post a 3-1 victory in the second game.

Shelby Robb and Miah Hartvigsen each had three hits – including a double and a homer – in the first game, which included a seven-run third inning by the Roadrunners to break it open.

Jenna Medhus (12-0) pitched a complete-game six-hitter, with three walks and six strikeouts.

"We were able to jump out early in game one," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "That gave us a lot of cushion, and we got good defense and pitching to seal the win.

"Outside of that one inning, our offense was too inconsistent. We weren't attacking like we needed to and couldn't string hits together."

MSU Denver (34-8) matched a season-low with just one run in the second game while being held to six hits.

"Their game two pitcher did a nice job of attacking and was efficient with her pitches, and as a team we didn't make enough adjustments," Van Wetzinga said.

The Roadrunners are 27-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and need a sweep of Monday's 11 a.m. doubleheader to retain a share of first place with Colorado Christian and Colorado Mesa at 29-3 – those teams wrapped up their weekend series on Sunday.

"Tomorrow is a new day and we're looking to come back stronger and win the series," Van Wetzinga said.
