ALAMOSA, Colo. – After erupting for 38 runs in the first 13 innings of the series, the MSU Denver baseball team's offense went stagnant Saturday as it was swept in a doubleheader at Adams State, 17-10 and 6-2.
MSU Denver won Friday's opener 28-15 and had a 10-9 lead after 3 ½ innings of Saturday's opener, but the Roadrunners went scoreless for eight innings and managed just two runs in 10 innings the rest of the day.
Adams State scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and snapped the Roadrunners' 24-game winning streak in the series with the game-one win. Then the Grizzlies built a 6-0 lead through five innings in the nightcap before holding on after allowing single runs on homers by
Cam Yuran and
Tyler Tobey in the sixth and seventh innings.
"We hit a ton of balls hard, probably lined out 15 times," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain. "But we mixed in some really bad at-bats. They threw their best pitcher the second game, and they made a couple of circus catches behind him. thought we hit more balls hard than they did, but that doesn't really matter."
MSU Denver dropped to 22-19 overall and 13-10 for fourth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Adams State improved to 18-19 and 13-6 for second.
While the Roadrunners' offense cooled,
Jesse Velders stayed red-hot, going 4-for-5 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the second game. That makes him an incredible 12-for-15 (.800) for the series, and lifts his season batting average to an RMAC-best .482 (53-for-110). The program record is .487, by MSU Denver Hall of Famer Torin Berge in 1987.
"Jesse is swinging it really well right now," Strain said. "I wish he could hit all the time."
A six-run top of the third inning in the first game gave MSU Denver an 8-3 advantage, but Adams State answered with six of its own in the bottom half of the frame to re-take the lead at 9-8.
MSU Denver got two runs in the top of the fourth for a 10-9 advantage, but the Grizzlies tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Jake Williams was 4-for-4 with four RBIs in the opening game.
Reichle Arcilise pitched a complete-game loss in the second game.
"We just didn't give ourselves a chance in the first game," Strain said. "But Reichle gave us a chance in the second game. We didn't make a couple of plays for him, but he did what he needed to do."
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.
