DENVER – In a matchup of two of the most prolific offenses in Division II softball, Colorado Mesa had the upper hand Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against MSU Denver 6-2 and 7-2.
Colorado Mesa tacked on four homers – three in the second game – to its nation-high total of 94, while MSU Denver, which led the country in batting average, doubles and runs, was limited to just 11 hits all day, including only three in the second game.
The Roadrunners were held without a hit through five innings of the nightcap as Mesa's Hannah Sattler was twirling a perfect game.
"There weren't any adjustments being made," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "She was just placing and changing speeds and we didn't adjust. We've got to be able to figure it out in the (batter's) box more. We're pressing and trying to do too much. I'm looking for team offense and not just going up there and trying to swing out of our shoes."
Colorado Mesa (33-7 overall, 31-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored first with a pair of third-inning runs in the opener, but
Shelby Robb's two-run homer in the bottom of the third tied it.
However, Mesa added single runs in the fourth and fifth, then two more in the sixth, and MSU Denver (35-11, 28-6) was unable to respond.
Jenna Medhus (12-1) allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings, and
Natalie Romero was charged with two runs in two innings.
"Overall, Jenna and Natalie did a nice job trying to keep us in the game, but at some point we've got to be able to find our bats and do something more on the offensive side," Van Wetzinga said. "It takes pressure off your pitchers when you're able to score some runs."
The teams will wrap up the series with a Sunday doubleheader at 11 a.m.
"New day tomorrow," Van Wetzinga said.
