DENVER – Late-game heroics helped the Roadrunners picked up two close wins in a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Mesa on Sunday.
Game One:
In the first game, MSU Denver rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Mavericks 6-5.
The Roadrunners found themselves down 3-0 in the fifth inning before
Hannah DiFabio connected on her first home of the season to get her team on the scoreboard.
Jenna Medhus also drove in a run in the fifth cutting the Mavericks lead to 3-2.
But CMU would respond by adding two more runs in the sixth to jump back out to a three-run lead.
Heading into the final inning, the Roadrunners were down to their final out after DiFabio struck out and
Lexi Gephart grounded out to third base.
Katie Maney singled to center field to start the rally. Then
Alexia Boring was plunked to earn first base. Then
Jaiden Geist earned a free pass to first base to load the bases for MSU Denver. Then Medhus would clear the bases with one swing of the bat to tie the game at 3-3.
But the heroics didn't end there for the Red and Blue. The next batter was
Adriana Bueno and she blooped a pitch into short left field where Makayla Westmoreland made a diving effort to catch the ball, but she trapped it allowing Medhus to score all the way from second base, giving the Roadrunners the 6-5 walk-off win.
Samantha Mader picked up the win giving up just two earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched, while striking out two Mavericks.
Game Two:
While MSU Denver battled from behind the entire first game, they got on the board early in this one and never gave up the lead.
Geist doubled in Gephart in the first inning to start the scoring. Then Gephart did some of her own damage at the plate driving in
Brooklyn Enny and
Miki Berg to put her team up 3-1 after the second inning.
Alexia Boring once again went deep this season, hitting her team-leading fifth home run in the third inning. That long ball gave her team a 3-1 advantage.
Geist once again came through with a timely hit, bringing home Boring to give her team a 7-2 lead in the sixth.
The Mavericks would try and rally in the seventh scoring three runs, before
Cheyenne Prieto came into pitch with runners at second and third and just one out on the board. Ally Distler flew out to center field, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly, but after the throw came home, Brynn Escobar was caught between second and third and would eventually be tagged out at third to end the threat and the game.
Prieto earned her fifth career save, which now places her in a tie for third all-time in Roadrunners history. The record belongs to Darby McGhee, who has eight from 2017-2021.
Roadrunners hang on for the 7-5 win to improve to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They will next head out on the road next weekend for a four-game set against the Grizzlies from Adams State.
