SHAWNEE, Okla – The Roadrunners' offense was quiet in two losses to Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday.
Game One:
The Bison scored eight runs over the first three innings and would never relinquish the lead taking the first game 9-5.
MSU Denver actually jumped on the board first scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. After
Andrew Graham walked and after
Erubiel Ortiz doubled, Graham was able to score on a Bison fielding error at third base.
Royce Vandine then singled up the middle to drive in Ortiz and
Jesse Velders came in to score on another error, this time by the right fielder.
But the Bison got to Roadrunners starting pitcher
Nolan Livsey, who would give up nine runs, eight earned, on five hits and four walks. He picked up the loss, evening his record at 1-1.
Relief pitchers
Joey Adge and
Alek Martinez did what they could in the final four innings to keep MSU Denver in the game. The duo gave up zero runs on two hits while striking out four.
But the Roadrunner bats went scoreless over the next five innings recording just three base hits over that time. The squad made a run in the seventh inning, as Ortiz singled in two runs bringing home
River Jackson and
Cam Yuran to cut the deficit to 9-5. But the run would end there, as the Bison would record the next two outs.
Ortiz finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in. Vandine also added two base hits and an RBI.
Game Two:
Oklahoma Baptist got a clutch base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Jaxon McAuliff drove in the go-ahead run to give his team the 4-3 win.
While MSU Denver's offense once again struggled to string base hits together, the pitching staff was able to keep the game close to give the Roadrunners a fighting chance at the end.
Ortiz once again paced the offense by getting on base three times and scoring two runs, which included a triple from the junior transfer, who later scored on an RBI single from
Easton Amundson.
The Roadrunners found themselves down 3-2 in the fourth inning when
Cal Walsh started the inning with a walk. The senior then stole second and advanced to third on a Adge fly out to right field. Walsh then raced home for the game-tying run on a wild pitch by Jalen Johnston.
After the Bison went up 4-3 in the sixth. MSU Denver still had a chance heading into the seventh, but the Roadrunners went down in order to fall to 1-5 on the season.
The Red and Blue will finish up their four-game set with Oklahoma Baptist on Sunday with first pitch taking place at around 11 a.m. mountain time.
