AUSTIN – The Roadrunners couldn't overcome a five-run first inning by the Hilltoppers in the 7-2 loss in the Texas trip finale.
MSU Denver gave up three singles, walked two, hit a batter and committed two errors that allowed St. Edward's to jump up 5-0 in the first inning.
Cheyenne Prieto got the start for the Roadrunners and would finish her day in the first inning giving up five runs, just three of those earned while striking out one.
Natalie Romero would finish the final five innings and pitched well to keep the Roadrunners in the game. The sophomore only gave up two hits the rest of the way, and the two runs that were scored were unearned in part to another error committed in the sixth inning.
The Roadrunners actually outhit the Hilltoppers 8-5, but the timely hits didn't come when
Neila Fee was left stranded at third in the second inning, when Fee was left stranded at third in the fourth and when
Lexi Gephart was stranded at second in the seventh.
MSU Denver found a run in the fourth inning when
Miki Berg drove in
Genevieve Bower on a sacrifice fly and in the sixth when
Jaiden Geist singled back up the middle bringing home
Miranda McCoy.
The loss dropped the softball team's record to 5-4 on the season after going 1-4 on the Texas road trip. Next week the squad will kick off conference play and take on Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado for a four-game set.
