LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Roadrunners split their Friday doubleheader with the Cowgirls, winning game one 9-1 before falling 5-4 in game two.
The MSU Denver Roadrunners were back on the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls' field on Friday afternoon, looking to add two more games to their win column.
After their two wins yesterday, the Roadrunners wanted to secure the sweep to close out their last two away games of the regular season.
In the first game, the Roadrunners were able to make the most out of their chances. They scored nine runs on nine hits and closed out the game in five innings. The second game was a close one, but the Roadrunners lost by a single run.
The Roadrunners are now 37-11 overall and 32-7 in conference play. They are currently first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
Game One:
Both teams had a slow start, as they went scoreless in the first inning. However, this was the only scoreless inning for the Roadrunners during the first game.
The Roadrunners jumped on the scoreboard first in the second inning, thanks to a two-run single by
Katie Maney. Then MSU Denver added another one on a solo home run by
Jaiden Geist in the third inning, putting them up 3-0.
Highlands scored their lone run in the third when Jazmyn Griego drove in a run on a ground out to second base.
Ultimately, the Roadrunners and starting pitcher
Samantha Mader were able to take control and stop the Cowgirls from scoring anymore runs the rest of the way. Mader ended the game by striking out two batters in a row, as the Cowgirls went three and out in the final inning.
The Roadrunners scored four more runs in the fourth inning, and
Brooklyn Enny's two RBI in the fifth inning gave the Roadrunners an eight-run lead.
Similar to yesterday, the pitching was key for the Roadrunners' victory. Mader pitched all five innings and only allowed one run on two hits.
Lexi Gephart led the Roadrunners in runs with three and Geist was able to assist the team with three RBI.
Game Two:
The Cowgirls wanted to avoid the four-game sweep, and they caught the Roadrunners by surprise in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs.
The Roadrunners were unfazed and maintained their composure, as
Cheyenne Prieto doubled, driving in
Alexia Boring to cut the deficit to just one.
The fifth inning was a big one for the visiting Roadrunners.
Hannah DiFabio hit a three-run home run, allowing
Adriana Bueno and
Janessa Esquibel to score to help the squad take a 4-3 lead. It was the senior's third long ball of the season.
The Cowgirls answered in the sixth inning with a two-run single by Amaya Castille that put the Cowgirls up 5-4. It was the first lead of the series for the hometown squad.
Karla Benegas, who started the game, got the final three outs of the game, earning the 5-4 win for her squad. Benegas went the full seven innings and giving up just three earned runs.
The Roadrunners will be back home next Friday for Alumni Day to face off against UC-Colorado Springs. It will be a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
