AUSTIN, Texas – MSU Denver men's soccer came up just short on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision to St. Edward's in non-conference action at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
The Hilltoppers (2-0-2) struck quickly, finding the net in the second minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners responded late in the first half when Adan Perez buried the equalizer in the 42nd minute, his first goal of the season, sending the match to halftime level at 1-1.
St. Edward's regained the lead in the 61st minute on a goal from Christian Mezas and managed to hold off a late MSU Denver push. The Roadrunners generated 10 shots overall, with Perez, Brendan O'Toole, and Phillie Villapudua each putting attempts on frame, while Maxwell Farnum and Cullen Freeman nearly found the breakthrough with close-range chances in the second half.
Goalkeeper Nick McNeil kept MSU Denver in the match with four saves, including two in the final 15 minutes as the Roadrunners pressed for an equalizer.
With the result, MSU Denver moved to 1-1-2 on the season after picking up its first win earlier in the week. The Roadrunners return home next weekend to continue non-conference play at the Assembly Athletic Complex against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday evening.
