SALT LAKE CITY — A night after seeing their 20-match RMAC winning streak snapped, No. 5 ranked MSU Denver responded in a big way. The Roadrunners powered past Westminster 3-1 on Saturday evening to bounce back and improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 as the Red and Blue overcame a slow start and steadily took control of the match.
Freshman standout Karyna Werley continued to shine, delivering a dominant performance with 18 kills, 15 assists, and three blocks while hitting .432, showcasingher ability to impact every phase of the game. It's a career-high 18 kills for Werley, who joins Annika Helf as the only Roadrunners with at least 18 kills in a game this season.
Werley was joined by a balanced attack as Brooke Gennerman tallied nine kills and two aces, while Kryssa Moerman hit .467 with eight kills and two blocks.
Skyler Michael added six kills without an error, and setter GabriElle Brewer directed the offense with 27 assists and nine digs. Libero Mia Accomazzo anchored the back row with a match-high 25 digs.
After hitting just .154 in Friday's loss at Colorado Mesa, MSU Denver rebounded to hit .273 as a team against Westminster while holding the Griffins to .129. The Roadrunners controlled the final two sets, outscoring Westminster 50-31 to close out the win.
With the victory, MSU Denver snapped its brief skid and quickly returned to form, and will take on Colorado School of Mines this upcoming Friday in Golden at 7 p.m. MT.
