DENVER – The MSU Denver men's soccer team opened its 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Roadrunners created consistent pressure, outshooting the Nighthawks 13-4 and earning an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't find the finishing touch in front of goal.
Brendan O'Toole paced MSU Denver with three shots, including one on target, while Rhyson Johnston, Phillie Villapudua, and Dallas Baer each put attempts on frame. Freshman John Lucio also added a dangerous effort in the second half.
In goal, senior Nick McNeil was steady, recording four saves to secure the clean sheet. On the other end, NNU goalkeeper Gerardo Fonte matched him with five saves to preserve the draw.
Both sides had looks late, with MSU Denver generating multiple corners in the closing minutes, but Fonte denied the Roadrunners' final chances.
With the result, both teams open the year 0-0-1. MSU Denver continues its non-conference slate Sunday afternoon against Fort Hays State at 2:30 p.m. MT at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
