DENVER – MSU Denver women's soccer put up a hard-fought battle against No. 22 ranked Regis on Friday evening at the Assembly Athletic Complex, but the Roadrunners came up short in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers, the top team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Regis struck twice in the opening 18 minutes, with Paige Davis opening the scoring in the 13th minute before Fernanda Rodriguez added another goal less than six minutes later to give the Rangers a 2-0 advantage.
Despite the early deficit, MSU Denver continued to compete and generated more opportunities as the match progressed. The Roadrunners finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge in the second half, while earning two corner kicks after halftime.
Freshman Makayla Bindrup provided a late spark for the Roadrunners, scoring her first career goal in the 81st minute. Bindrup found the back of the net at 80:37 to cut the deficit to one and give MSU Denver a chance to pull even in the closing minutes.
The Roadrunners continued to push forward after Bindrup's goal, looking for an equalizer. Taylor Matthews put a shot on target in the 88th minute, but Regis goalkeeper Maggie Payne made the save to preserve the Rangers' lead.
MSU Denver recorded 10 shots in the match, matching Regis with three shots on goal. Kiley Hyde played all 90 minutes in goal for the Roadrunners and made one save.
The Roadrunners will look to rebound Sunday when they return to the Assembly Athletic Complex to host Black Hills State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
