The Metro State volleyball team (11-7, 9-2 RMAC) used tough serving to overcome CSU-Pueblo, 25-16, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action at the Auraria Events Center.
Junior libero Amy Watanabe tied a career high with six service aces along 14 digs. Bri Morley returned to the lineup and had 12 kills, followed by Amanda Cook with 11 and Lisa Jones with 10 kills apiece.
The 'Runners controlled the first two sets by consistently getting the Thunderwolves out of system and taking advantage of opportunities. Metro combined to hit .365 in the first two sets, while holding CSUP to a .000 hitting percentage.
MSCD continued the pattern of a mental lapse in the third set, allowing CSUP to jump out to leads of 6-1 and 15-9. Watanabe served the 'Runners back into the set, sparking an 8-1 run to give MSCD the lead at 17-16. The teams would trade points until 23-23, when two consecutive Metro State hitting errors would give the set to the Thunderwolves.
The 'Runners returned to form in the fourth set. At one point Amanda Cook served nine consecutive balls to give MSCD a commanding 17-5 lead. Metro State closed the match on a service error from CSU Pueblo.
The Roadrunners travel to New Mexico next weekend to face NM Highlands on Thursday and Western New Mexico on Saturday.
