The Metro State volleyball team (13-7, 11-2 RMAC) saved its best game for last in outlasting Western New Mexico, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-9, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play in Silver City, N.M. The victory moved the 'Runners into a two-game lead for second place in the RMAC.
The first set see sawed back and forth with neither team having a lead of more than three points. The 'Runner led 24-22 after a kill from freshman Julie Causseaux, and ended the set on a block from Causseaux.
Metro State continued the momentum in the beginning of the second set, opening an 11-7 advantage. WNMU rallied to score 13 of the next 17 points to control the set at 20-15. The Mustangs ended the set on consecutive kills from freshman Dreanne Shaw.
The third set was again a close one, as the 'Runners pulled away late. Tied at 20-20, the Mustangs made two consecutive errors to give Metro State a 22-20 lead. Following a kill from WNMU, Bri Morley had a kill and Cauusseaux had a kill and a block to finish the set.
WNMU controlled the fourth set, holding the 'Runners to an .027 hitting percentage.
For the fourth consecutive five-game match, the 'Runners came out on fire in the fifth set. After Amy Watanabe served the team to a 4-1, Amanda Cook stepped back to the service line and led the team to a huge 13-4 lead. The Mustangs scored four consecutive points to close the score to 13-8, but Morley pounded two kills to end the match.
Morley again led the offensive effort with 17 kills and seven digs. Lisa Jones added 12 kills and three blocks. Darcy Schwartzman ran the offense with 48 assists and five digs.
The 'Runners travel to Regis, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
