Volleyball Comebacks to Beat Regis, 3-2

The Metro State volleyball team continued its dominance in five-game matches with a 25-18, 19-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-10 victory over Regis University, Tuesday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play at Regis. The victory improved the Roadrunners to 14-7 overall and 12-2 in RMAC play while Regis fell to 12-10 and 8-6 in the RMAC.

The match marked the fifth time in the last eight matches that the 'Runners have needed five games to secure the victory.

"We have definitely made a pattern of this kind of match," Head Coach Debbie Hendricks said. "I think as we approach post season play, it is crucial for us to maintain a high level of play, and be able to move on from our mistakes."

Metro trailed early in the first set, committing four hitting errors in the first 12 points to trail the Rangers 4-8. The 'Runners settled down and scored 10 of the next 11 points to take the lead 14-9. From that point, Metro State cruised to the victory.

As has been the pattern lately, the Roadrunners let down in the next two sets and allowed Regis to pick up its game. The Rangers notched hitting percentages of .368 and .314 in winning the second and third sets.

Metro responded in the fourth set. After trading points early, Amanda Cook served the 'Runners to a 20-15 advantage. Bri Morley pounded two kills down the stretch and a Rangers' hitting error ended the set.

The 'Runners came out fast in the fifth set, racing to a 4-1 lead, but Regis fought back to tie the score at 4-4. The teams traded points until 9-9, when sophomore Lisa Jones went back to serve. The 'Runners ran off five straight points, led by three kills from Morley to take a 14-9 lead. Morley finished the match with her 21st kill of the night.

Amanda Cook added 13 kills and 11 digs and freshman Emily Greenhalgh had 13 kills. Freshman setter Darcy Schwartzman had a career high 58 assists.

Metro State travels to Nebraska-Kearney, Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST. The Lopers currently hold a one game lead over Metro State in the RMAC East Division.
