Metro State Falls in NCAA Tournament

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - For the third time in two weeks, Fort Lewis got the best of Metro State.

Jamie Cunningham's second half goal was enough for the No. 2 Skyhawks, who advance to second round of the NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament with a 1-0 win over the No. 19 Roadrunners.

Metro State (12-7-3) outshot Fort Lewis (17-1-3) on the night, 13-10. Both teams got five shots on goal, but the Skyhawks were the only ones who could figure out how to get one into the back of the net.

Action in the first half was few and far between. The teams combined for only three shots on goal, with the score tied at zero heading into halftime.

With seconds to go in the first half, Skyhawks sophomore forward Euan Purcell had a shot 15 yards in front of the goal - but it sailed high over the crossbar.

Fort Lewis, the top team in the Rocky Mountain Conference, was held to just seven total shots in the first half, while Metro State could only manage four.

In the 64th minute, Fort Lewis took the lead when Cunningham recovered a loose ball in the box and scored from 16 yards out. It was just one of the Skyhawks' three shots in the final half. The following minute, Metro State freshman forward Ri Armstrong had a shot hit off the right post.

The Roadrunners had another golden opportunity to tie it in the 72nd minute, when Steven Emory crossed it to Ola Sandquist on a fast break, but the senior midfielder's shot was wide right.

With the clock ticking down on the Roadrunners' season, Metro State had their chances. Four free kicks and three corner kicks in the final six minutes amounted to nothing and Chris Yoder (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.)'s shot from deep went right into Fort Lewis goalkeeper Zane Wells' arms as time expired.

Fort Lewis beat Metro State, 3-2, on Oct. 31, then again in the conference championship on Sunday, winning 2-0. The Skyhawks will take on the winner between No. 3 Midwestern State and unranked Incarnate Word on Saturday at 5 p.m.
