DENVER, Colo. -
Metro State athletic director Joan McDermott announced that the College will partner with fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Christian and Regis University for Miles for Myles, a benefit for cancer research in honor of the late NCAA President, Myles Brand. The four RMAC institutions will host a 3-mile run/walk on Sunday, Nov. 8, on the Metro State campus.

“We're really pleased that our RMAC partners wanted to join us for this great cause,” McDermott said. “We believe it is a great opportunity to unite our drive to benefit cancer research.”

The race will begin at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Auraria Event Center and follow a campus route. The benefit will conclude prior to the RMAC women's soccer tournament championship game, which will be played at noon at Metro State.

Miles for Myles is an initiative designed to perpetuate the legacy of leadership of the late NCAA President Myles Brand and to carry on with his valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. Developed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which has been joined by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), NCAA and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as partners, Miles for Myles provides an opportunity for the collegiate athletic community to demonstrate its solidarity and to raise awareness and contribute funds for cancer research, specifically in the area of pancreatic cancer. The disease took Brand's life in September.

“As a champion of the student-athlete's well-being, and a tireless advocate for the educational experience of intercollegiate athletics, I can't think of a more fitting event to honor Dr. Brand,” Dr. Stephen Jordan, Metropolitan State College of Denver President said.

Each person participating in the event is asked to donate $3 ($1 per mile), which will go directly to three charitable efforts to fight pancreatic cancer: Coaches vs. Cancer, The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and The Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research.

Registrations will be accepted the day of the event at the start line in front of the Auraria Event Center. All are welcome to participate. For more information, please contact Andy Schlichting at 303-556-3431 or aschlic1@mscd.edu.
