GUNNISON, Colo. - The Metro State women's basketball team fell 77-68 to Western State on Saturday night in Gunnison. The Roadrunners fell to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSC improved to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored a season-high 15 points, hitting 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line, and added four rebounds.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) and
Leandra Sands (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson H.S.) each had 13 points as well.
Metro State was outrebounded 39-29, but forced 20 turnovers. The Roadrunners shot 40.7 (24-for-59) percent from the field.
The Roadrunners ended the first half on an 11-2 run, cutting an 11-point Mountaineer lead to just two at 34-32. Metro State led 39-36 on a 3-pointer by Sands two minutes into the second half, but WSC answered with a 14-2 run to take a 50-41 lead with 12:28 left to play.
Metro State again cut the lead to three points, but the Mountaineers built their lead back to 17 at 74-57 with under three minutes left.
Brooke Pendergraft led WSC with 19 points.
The Roadrunners will head to Mesa State for a 6 p.m. game on Sunday.
