DENVER,COLO. - Metro State College cruised to a 71-49 victory over first place Colorado School of Mines on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center in downtown Denver. The win improves Metro State to 10-12 overall and 8-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Colorado Mines drops to 14-8 overall and 11-3 in the RMAC, still holding on to first place in the East Division.
Jasmine Cervantes led Metro State with 17 points, just one point shy of a career high. Megan Sinclair had 13 points, followed by Kiley Gill with 12 and Sharaya Selsor with 11. Chelsea Williamson led the Roadrunners with eight rebounds, followed by Sinclair with seven, as they enjoyed a 38-26 rebounding edge over the Orediggers on the evening. Selsor tied a career high with a game-high five assists.
Gill scored 10 of her career-high 12 points in the first half, helping Metro State jump out to a 36-16 halftime lead. With the game tied at 5-5, Metro State went on a 14-5 run to take a 21-9 lead on a three-pointer by Gill with 8:40 left in the half. Following a triple from Colorado Mines, the Roadrunners went on an 11-0 run, capped by jumpers by Cervantes and Sinclair with under three minutes left.
The Orediggers cut Metro State's lead to 10 at 44-34 with 10:05 to play in the second half. But Selsor answered with a three-pointer to start a 17-4 run to give the Roadrunners a 23-point lead at 61-38 with 5:30 to play. Free throws by Sinclair and a jumper by Cervantes in the final three minutes put Metro State up 71-46 for its largest lead of the night, before Kait Soehner hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to make the final score of 71-49.
A solid defensive effort by Metro State held Colorado Mines to just 25.5 percent from the field, the lowest field goal percentage by a Roadrunner opponent this season. On the other end, Metro State shot 47.1 percent
The Roadrunners will host Colorado Christian on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. once again in the Auraria Event Center.
