Metro State Cruises to Second Victory of the Weekend

DENVER, COLO. - The Metro State College women's basketball team cruised to an 84-67 victory over Colorado Christian on Saturday at the Auraria Event Center in Denver. The win was the Roadrunners' second consecutive and improves them to 11-12 overall and 9-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season. Colorado Christian drops to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in the RMAC.

Megan Sinclair, playing the final home game of her career, scored a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and one steal to lead a balanced attack for Metro State. Six player scored in double figures for the Roadrunners, including Sinclair's 18, Rae Bean with 14, Sharaya Selsor with 12, Chelsea Williamson with 11, and Jasmine Cervantes and Kiley Gill with 10 each. Four players, including Sinclair, had at least three assists, led by Sinclair, Bean, and Williamson with four each, and Cervantes with three.

Trailing 14-13 with 13 minutes left in the first half, Metro State went on a 13-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 26-18 lead. Cervantes and Leandra Sands each hit a pair of baskets, including a three-pointer by Sands to spark the run. Williamson later hit a three-pointer and converted a three-point play on consecutive possessions to give the Roadrunners a 34-23 lead. She carried the team early, scoring all of her 11 points before half time as the Roadrunners held a 42-31 lead at the break.

Metro State built a 13-point lead early in the second half, but Colorado Christian cut the lead to eight at 53-45 with 13:33 left to play. Sinclair hit two free throws and made jumper on back-to-back possessions to spark a 6-0 run to put the Roadrunners up 59-45 with just over 10 minutes to play. Metro State cruised over the final 10 minutes, leading by 19 with 25 seconds left after two free throws by Cervantes, but a basket by the Cougars with 12 seconds left made the final score of 84-67.

Metro State shot 50.8 percent from the field, including 7-of-14 from the outside. The Roadrunners also were nearly flawless at the free throw line, converting 11-of-12 attempts. Another solid defensive effort for Metro State forced 16 CCU turnovers and held the Cougars to just 36.4 percent shooting. The Roadrunners committed just eight turnovers on the day, its lowest total this season.

Metro State hits the road next weekend as it travels to Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Feb. 20 for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
