CHADRON, Neb. - Rae Bean recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Metro State to a 61-60 win at Chadron State.
The Roadrunners, who only trailed only once in the game, 5-4 early in the first half, held off a late surge by the Eagles to record their third RMAC road victory of the season.
Metro State held a five-point lead at intermission, 35-30, and pushed the lead to 44-32 after opening the second stanza with a 9-2 run. Megan Sinclair (Victoria, Australia/Avila College)'s jumper with 10:51 to play gave the Roadrunners a 50-40 advantage, but the Eagles began to chip away.
A pair of free throws by Chelsea DeHaven pulled Chadron State to within 56-53 with 2:32 remaining. Bean responded with a pair of jumpers for the Roadrunners, but DeHaven kept the Eagles close with a layup and two more free throws. Sinclair added a free throw for a 61-57 Metro State lead. Kristy Long drained a three-pointer on the next Eagles possession to make it a one-point game, 61-60, with only three ticks on the clock. Neither team would score again.
Sinclair finished the game with 15 points for Metro State, while Jasmine Cervantes added 14 points. DeHaven led Chadron State with 15 points.
Metro State is now 12-13 overall and 10-7 in the RMAC, while Chadron State fell to 11-14 overall and 6-11 in conference play. The Roadrunners, currently tied for third place in the RMAC East Division with Regis, face the Rangers on the road Feb. 24. The Regis vs. Metro State outcome could have a significant impact on seeding for the RMAC Tournament.
The quarterfinals of the RMAC Tournament begin March 3 (campus sites), followed by the semifinals and finals March 6-7, respectively, in Pueblo, Colo. Metro State closes out the regular season by traveling to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Feb. 28.
