Postgame Interview with Jen Thomas
DENVER, Colo. - Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) scored on a cross by
Taylor Nicholls (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) in the 104th minute as the No. 3 Metro State women's soccer team defeated Angelo State (Texas) 1-0 in overtime on Sunday at Auraria Field in Denver. The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 this season, while the Rambelles dropped to 0-2.
Metro State had chances all day, outshooting Angelo State 25-5, but could not put the ball past ASU goalkeeper Melanie Peterson, who made 16 saves in the losing effort.
Becca Maloney (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) made four saves for her 16th career shutout at Metro State.
Thomas had seven shot attempts, including five on goal to lead the Roadrunners.
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) also had five attempts, followed by
Ashley Nemmers (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) with four. But Peterson always seemed to be in the right spot with the majority of Metro State's attempts being shot right at her.
Peterson made three saves in the first 15 minutes of the game, including stopping a header by
Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.) off a corner kick from
Gabby Klipp (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) at the 14:11 mark.
ASU got its first chance of the day in the 17th minute, but Maloney stopped Lauren Carnes' shot to keep the game scoreless. The Roadrunners had four shot attempts during another run over the next 11 minutes, including a breakaway by Nicholls. All four shots either resulted in a save or missed high.
Metro State ended the first half with shots by Nemmers, Thomas and Klipp following a yellow card on ASU's Brandie DeBacker in the final five minutes.
The second half was more evenly played, though Metro State still outshot Angelo State 10-2 after outshooting the Rambelles 12-2 in the first half. Nemmers had a great chance in the final minute of regulation, but missed high from about 15 yards in front of the net.
Peterson made a diving stop on a McQuilliams shot from the right side just over five minutes into the first overtime period. One of ASU's best chances of the game came with less than a minute left in the first overtime as Christian Willman's shot from 20 yards out sailed just over the goal, landing on top of the net.
McQuilliams had a shot from seven yards in front of the goal blocked by an ASU defender in the first minute of the second overtime. Nicholls then found Thomas two minutes later. Nicholls took the ball from deep in the right corner and fired it as she was off-balance towards the front of the net where Thomas deflected it up off the crossbar and into the net to end the game.
The Roadrunners played their second consecutive game without All-America senior forward
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) who had to sit out the first two games of the season after receiving two red cards last season.
Metro State will host No. 15 Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. at Auraria Field. Mays will be back in the lineup for that game.
