DENVER, Colo. -
The No. 9 Fort Lewis men's soccer team shut out Metro State 2-0 in a wild, physical game on Sunday at Auraria Field on Metro State's homecoming.  FLC improved to 7-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Metro State dropped to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the RMAC.

Ten cautions were handed out in the game, including three red cards, two against Metro State.  The Roadrunners were also called for 18 fouls, compared to nine on Fort Lewis.

Euan Purcell scored his 10th goal of the young season in the 41st minute to put the Skyhawks ahead after he slid in to score on Sam Morris' cross.

Keane Hamilton later added an insurance goal in the 77th minute in a 1-on-1 situation with Metro State goalkeeper Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.).

FLC dominated play early, peppering four shots towards the Roadrunners goal in the first 13 minutes, including a header by Purcell in the 11th minute that hit the right post.  Tom Settle nearly found the net in the 29th minute, but Metro State midfielder Chris Yoder (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.) kicked the ball out of the net before it crossed the goalline.  The Skyhawks outshot Metro State 9-3 in the first half, while six yellow cards were handed out before the intermission, three on each team.

The Skyhawks continued to control play early in the second half, though Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) had a shot on goal in the 48th minute that was saved by Zane Wells and Emory missed just inches high of the crossbar from the top of the box in the 57th minute.

Metro State then caught a pair of breaks to shift the momentum.  A red card was handed out to FLC's Jamie Cunningham in the 61st minute when he tackled Grode from behind near midfield, allowing Metro State to play with a man advantage.  Just four minutes later, Wells, the 2008 RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, was forced to leave the game with an injury when he broke up an inbounds pass from the left side.

The Roadrunners, facing Fort Lewis' backup goalkeeper and with a man advantage, were able to control play, but still managed just one shot over the next few minutes, a header by Grode that missed left of the net.

Momentum again shifted in the 73rd minute when Grode was handed his second yellow card of the game, equaling a red card, on a controversial play as Grode went up for a header and was collided with from behind.  The two teams continued play with nine field players each.

Hamilton then added his goal just three minutes after Grode's red card to seal the game.

Metro State was outshot 15-7 for the game.

The Roadrunners will travel to Colorado Christian for a 3 p.m. game on Friday, Oct. 2.
