Postgame Interview with Gabe Curtis (9/4/09)
DENVER, Colo. - The No. 23 Metro State volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Western Oregon on Friday afternoon at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, winning 25-12, 25-17, 25-23 at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 5-0, while WOU dropped to 1-5 this season. The 5-0 start to the season for Metro State is the best start since winning the first seven matches in 1993.
Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) led the way with a match-high 16 kills.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) added 13 and
Lisa Jones (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East H.S.) chipped in with 10. Morley hit .478 (13-2-23), while Jones converted at .429 (10-1-21).
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) also had an efficient afternoon with eight kills and two errors in 14 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage.
Gabe Curtis (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) had 47 assists to control the offense.
Amy Watanabe (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) led the defense with 15 digs.
As a team, Metro State hit .361 (57-14-119) and held the Wolves to just .184 (27-9-98).
Metro State controlled play throughout the first two sets, but struggled at time during the third set and trailed 22-19 before winning six of the final seven points to seal the victory.
The Roadrunners will face No. 1 and two-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul at 7:30 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center. The winner will advance to the Gold Division on Saturday with a chance to play for tournament championship.
