Cold Shooting Dooms Roadrunners at Pueblo

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. -
Metro State shot just 36.0 percent from the floor, which was not enough to top RMAC West Division first place opponent Colorado State-Pueblo, as the ThunderWolves won 68-51 on Saturday night in Pueblo. The Roadrunners slipped to 8-7 overall and 3-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC.

A night after hitting 46 percent from the floor, the Roadrunners connected on just 18-of-50 shot attempts, including 1-of-14 from the outside. To make the shooting woes worse, they made just 14-of-27 (51.9 percent) free throw attempts, their second-lowest percentage of the season.

The ThunderWolves, on the other hand, shot 43.4 percent from the floor, including 6-of-13 from the arc, and made 16-of-20 at the line. CSUP also outrebounded Metro State 39-31.

Freshman Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) led the Roadrunners with a career-high 16 points, as she shot 6-of-8 from the floor. She also pulled down five rebounds, but fouled out for the first time in her young career.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.), who also fouled out as the two leading scorers combined for 10 of the team's 21 fouls, scored 10 points and had a career-high six steals to go with five rebounds and three assists.

Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) added nine points and Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) filled up the stat sheet with eight points and six rebounds, hitting all six free throw attempts on the night. Williamson also had four steals, four rebounds and three assists.

After trailing by nine points with a season-low 19 points at halftime, Metro State scored the first eight points of the second half to cut the lead to 28-27 as Cervantes went off for six points.

The Roadrunners kept it within one point at 34-33 with 13 minutes left, but a 19-4 run by the ThunderWolves blew the game open.

Amanda Barlett led five CSUP players in double figures with 14 points, burying 6-of-10 from the floor.

Metro State will travel to Regis on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
