DENVER, Colo. -
Metro State used one of its best defensive efforts of the season as it defeated Western New Mexico 63-48 on Saturday evening in Denver.  The Roadrunners improved to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.), making her second start of the season, recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor.  She added two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) poured in 11 points--all in the first half--and pulled down eight rebounds, but fouled out with 2:34 remaining in the game.  She hit 4-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from the outside.

Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) and Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) each scored nine points and Leandra Sands (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson H.S.) scored eight.  Williamson tied a career high with seven assists, while Valencia added 10 rebounds and three steals.

It was a defensive game for both squads, but Metro State forced 23 turnovers and held WNMU to just 31.0 (18-for-58) percent shooting, including 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from the outside.  The Roadrunners also outrebounded the Mustangs 47-41, but shot just 32.8 (21-for-64) percent from the floor.

Metro State led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but a couple of late baskets by WNMU cut the halftime lead to 28-22 behind Kohn's big first half.  Despite shooting just 29.4 percent in the first half, the Roadrunners hit 4-of-9 from the outside.

Two early baskets by the Mustangs cut Metro State's lead to 28-26 less than two minutes into the second half.  After WNMU hung around and trailed 35-32 at the 13 minute mark, Metro State responded with a 16-3 run, including nine straight points, as five different players scored for the Roadrunners.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 15, at New Mexico Highlands for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
