DENVER – No. 16 Regis University edged No. 11 Metro State 2-1 at Regis in double overtime on Wednesday in a wild game that had a disallowed goal against the visitors late in the game. The Roadrunners dropped to 8-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Rangers improved to 9-1-2 and 5-1-2.
The Rangers got on the board first in the 39th minute with an own goal. Keegan Bast ripped a free kick from 40 yards out, but
Dele Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) headed the ball into the top left corner of the net as he tried to clear it.
Scott Crawford (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) evened the score in the 60th minute. After
Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) took the ball away near midfield, he dribbled up the left side and crossed the ball to Crawford, who ripped a shot from 22 yards out.
A controversial call came late in the game in the 75th minute. Freshman
Walter Bertini (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) put Metro State ahead 2-1 with a header off a corner kick from Crawford. After officials conferred, they waived off the goal and awarded Regis with a goal kick. Regis goalkeeper Scott Brown was injured on the play and the referees determined that a Metro State player caused the injury, resulting in a foul instead of a goal.
The Roadrunners had two excellent chances in the second minute of overtime.
Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) ripped a shot from inside the box, but a Regis defender kicked it out of the net. Seconds later,
Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) had another opportunity to end the game, but goalkeeper Doug Passalaqua made a one-handed, diving save, punching the ball out to keep the game alive.
The Rangers countered with an attack, but
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) made a save. Emory had a chance to win the game in the 98th minute. With a Regis player down at midfield with an injury, play continued and Emory took a pass deep into Regis territory and had a 1-on-1 with Passalaqua from a sharp angle on the left side. His long floater sailed just high of the net.
Just over four minutes into the second overtime period, Nathan Kafer took a cross on the right side from Lio DelPiccolo and finished past the Metro State defense to end the game.
Regis outshot Metro State 31-12 in the game, though shots on goal were nearly even with the Rangers holding an 8-7 edge. Bissau stopped six shots for the Roadrunners.
Metro State will host No. 25 Fort Lewis on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
