PUEBLO, Colo. - No. 18 Metro State rallied to win 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 at Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday. The Roadrunners improved to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the ThunderWolves fell to 6-12 and 2-9.
With the offense not clicking as usual,
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) matched a career high with 20 digs for the second night in a row to help the Roadrunners to the win. Metro State also had 10 blocks, led by
Anna Mapes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska H.S.) with five total.
Metro State hit just .193 after hitting .370 last night in a sweep at New Mexico Highlands. It was the first time in five matches this season that Metro State won despite hitting under .200.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 14 kills, followed by
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) with 12 and
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) with 10.
With the score tied 18-18 in the first set, CSUP scored seven of the final 10 points to win 25-21.
Metro State responded in the second, scoring six straight points to take an 11-5 lead. Leading 18-14, the Roadrunners ran off five in a row again and took the set 25-17.
The ThunderWolves held off a big run by Metro State in the third set as both teams turned up the offense. Metro State hit a match-best .312 in the third, while CSUP also had its best offensive set, hitting .179.
CSUP used a six-point run of its own in the fourth to lead 12-9. After the teams traded points, Metro State scored six of the next seven to lead 16-14. ThunderWolves tied the match at 18-18. With the score tied at 23-23, Metro State used a kill by Greenhalgh and a block by Morley and Causseaux to take the match.
Metro State will play at Adams State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
