DENVER - No. 1 Colorado Mines edged No. 24 Metro State 2-1 in overtime in Denver on Friday as the Roadrunners dropped another tough game. Mines improved to 14-0-1 this season, including 11-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Roadrunners fell to 9-5-2 and 6-4-2.
After taking an early lead, Metro State had a goal in the second half called back on a delayed offsides call and a late penalty kick sent the game to overtime in two frustrating and controversial calls against the Roadrunners. Last Wednesday, Metro State fell 2-1 to Regis in overtime after another tough call went against the Roadrunners that sent the game to overtime.
The two teams played evenly for much of the game, despite a 22-10 shot advantage for CSM. The Roadrunners kept the majority of Mines' shot attempts from outside the 18-yard box.
Chris Yoder (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.) had an early scoring chance for Metro State as he was taken down from behind inside the box on a breakaway in the opening minutes, but a no-call gave the Orediggers possession.
Shortly after,
Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) kept the game scoreless by kicking a header from Jacob Juett out of the net, preventing an early CSM goal.
Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) pounced on the next scoring opportunity.
David Toler (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) played a ball from deep in Metro State territory to
Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) deep in Mines territory. After a give-and-go with Grode, Grode fired a shot from the left side of the net inside the box past Oredigger goalkeeper Manville Strand for the early 1-0 lead.
For Emory, it was the fifth consecutive game with at least one assist, breaking the previous school record of four set by Antonio Porras in 2005 and tied by Kellen Johnson in 2008. Emory also stretched his streak to seven consecutive games with at least one point, tying Johnson's 2008 record.
The Roadrunners appeared to take a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute.
Tyler Wilson (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) took a free kick from the Metro State side of midfield. Emory headed the ball over Strand's reach and into the net. After the celebration, the goal was called back following a discussion between the referee and the linesman in nearly identical fashion to last week's Regis game.
Metro State was called for a foul near the Oredigger bench in Metro State territory, leading to a long free kick. On the ensuing set play, the Roadrunners were called for a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Chike Sullivan pushed the penalty kick to the left of Roadrunner goalkeeper
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) to tie the game.
Emory put a header off a corner kick on goal just four minutes later, but a Mines defender cleared the ball to prevent the goal.
In overtime, RMAC leading scorer Tesho Akindele ended the game, heading Sullivan's deep cross from the right side past Bissau for the golden goal 5:23 into the period.
Bissau stopped three shots.
The physical game saw six yellow cards and 29 fouls called.
Metro State will host Colorado Christian in its final regular season home game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
