COLORADO SPRINGS – No. 18 Metro State held on to win 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 24-26, 16-14 at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday. The Roadrunners improved to 13-5 and 7-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS dropped to 10-8 and 4-5 in the RMAC.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) put down a career high 24 kills and hit .347 (24-7-49) in the victory. She also had six digs and two blocks. Four others joined her in double figures in kills, including
Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) with 14,
Anna Mapes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska H.S.) and
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) with 13 and
Lisa Jones (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East H.S.) with 12. Causseaux added seven blocks, while Mapes hit .429 (13-4-21).
Setter
Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) had a career night with career highs of 61 assists and 22 digs, while helping the Roadrunners hit .239 in the match. Jones added a career-high 16 digs to lead the rest of the team, followed by
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) with 14 and
Nikky Sapp (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) with 12.
The Roadrunners rallied from an 18-14 deficit in the first set to win 25-21, scoring six straight points to take a 20-19 lead. Metro State held the Mountain Lions to just a .100 hitting percentage in the first set.
The second set was similar with the Roadrunners trailing 18-16, but six straight points put Metro State up 22-18. The Roadrunners hit .375 in the second set.
After taking the falling in the third set, Metro State fought off three times, but ended up losing 26-24 after hitting just .146.
The Roadrunners led 4-1 in the deciding set, but UCCS rallied to take a 7-5 lead. With the score tied at 14-14, Morley put down consecutive kills to end the match.
Metro State will play at New Mexico Highlands on Thursday at 7 p.m.
