Box Score
SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Metro State women's basketball rolled to its sixth straight victory, topping Western New Mexico 56-36 on the road on Saturday. The Roadrunners improve to 6-0 to start the season and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WNMU fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.
The 6-0 start is the second-best start in school history. Metro State also opened 2004-05 with six consecutive wins and started the 1991-92 season with seven wins.
The 36 points allowed were the fifth-fewest allowed in a game in Metro State history. The school record came in a 50-30 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) on Nov. 18, 2000. Metro State also came close to a school record for fewest points allowed in a half. The Roadrunners led 31-12 at halftime and the record for fewest points allowed in a half is 10, also set in the game against Lincoln (Pa.). It was the first time since 2008 that Metro State held an opponent under 15 points in the first half.
Western New Mexico was held to just 19.6 (10-for-51) percent shooting in the game, the third-lowest field goal percentage for a Metro State opponent. The Roadrunners held Lincoln to 10.2 (5-for-49) percent and also held Colorado Mines to 18.6 (11-for-59) percent on Feb. 11, 1992.
WNMU went 0-for-19 from the outside on Saturday.
Metro State also had a 56-31 rebounding advantage, the second time this season it has had a +25 rebounding margin or better.
Individually,
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) had a season-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, hitting both of her 3-point attempts and both of her free throw attempts.
Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) scored 10 points and led the team with four assists.
Tawny Drexler (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) led the rebounding dominance with 11 boards, while adding seven points.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had 10 rebounds and two steals.
Eleven Roadrunners scored on Saturday and 10 different players had at least one rebound.
Metro State jumped out to a 14-1 lead on a 3-pointer by Wood just seven minutes into the game and led 21-4 with under nine minutes to play in the first half.
Chelsea Libonati (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) hit a pair of free throws for a 31-10 lead with 1:01 to play in the half before WNMU scored with 43 seconds left to take a 31-12 score into halftime.
Metro State held the Mustangs to just 17.4 percent shooting in the first half, held a 30-16 rebounding advantage, and forced nine turnovers, while committing just six in one of the most dominant halves of play in school history. Wood led all scorers with 10 points at the break.
A jumper by Drexler in the paint gave Metro State its largest lead of the game of 23 points at 37-14 with 16:40 left in the game. The Mustangs got some offense going and went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 37-23 with 12:30 left. But that was as close as they would get the rest of the game as the Roadrunners quickly stretched the margin back to 20 points.
Metro State will return open for its home conference opener on Friday against Nebraska-Kearney at 5 p.m.
