LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Metro State allowed Colorado Christian to shoot 82.4 percent in the second half as the Cougars defeated the Roadrunners 77-71 on Friday night in Lakewood. CCU held on to first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division with a record of 13-8 overall and 11-3 in the RMAC, while Metro State slipped to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in the RMAC.
CCU hit 14-of-17 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from the outside, for the first time in nine years an opponent shot 80 percent in a half against the Roadrunners. The last team to do so was Minnesota State, Mankato on Nov. 16, 2001, when it hit 24-for-30 (80.0 percent) in the second half.
Conversely, Metro State made just 36.1 percent of its shot in the second half on Friday.
Colorado Christian shot 61.9 percent for the game, the first time a Roadrunner opponent has shot over 60 percent in a game since 2007.
The Roadrunners could not find an answer for Abby Rosenthal, who scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor.
Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) led Metro State with 23 points, drilling 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from the outside.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) also scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had 13 rebounds, but hit just 3-of-10 from the floor and had eight points.
CCU built a 13-point lead midway through the second half. Metro State was able to chip away, but never got closer than four points.
The Roadrunners will travel to Colorado Mines for a 6 p.m. game on Saturday.
