LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The No. 11 Metro State men's soccer team rolled to a 7-1 victory at Colorado Christian on Friday behind six second-half goals. The Roadrunners improved to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU dropped to 1-7-0 and 1-3-0 in the RMAC.
Metro State out-shot CCU 40-8 in the game. It was the first time since Oct. 9, 2004, that the Roadrunners attempted over 40 shots in a game. They attempted 44 against Embry Riddle in that game. On Friday, the Roadrunners also had 20 shots on goal, eight short of the school record.
Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) put the Roadrunner in front in the 29th minute as Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) assisted on the first goal of his big day.
CCU evened the score in the 36th minute as Michael McHugh scored. The teams went into halftime tied, despite Metro State holding a 22-5 shot advantage in the first half.
Herschberger wasted no time putting Metro State in front, scoring less than three minutes into the second half as Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) assisted. After that, the flood gates opened.
Grode scored back-to-back goals in the 55th and 62nd minutes. Tyler Wilson (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) then scored his first career goal on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Freshmen Walter Bertini (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) and Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) each netted the first goal of their careers in the 79th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
Grode totaled five points on the day with two goals and an assists, come up one point short of tying his career high of five. Two of the three two-goal games in his career have come against CCU. Herschberger had a goal and and two assist, the first time in his career he has had at least one of each in a game.
Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) made three saves in the first half, but gave way to Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) after the CCU goal. Bissau stopped two shots to earn the win.
Metro State will travel to No. 3 Colorado Mines for a noon game on Sunday.
