Tale of Two Halves as Women's Basketball Crushes CSU-Pueblo with Big Second Half

DENVER -
No. 21 Metro State held Colorado State-Pueblo to 14 second-half points as the host Roadrunners won 74-47 at home on Friday.  Metro State (14-0, 10-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) took sole possession of first place in the conference with No. 3 Fort Lewis' loss at Colorado Christian on Friday.

CSUP fell to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the RMAC.

Metro State dominated the glass, outrebounding the ThunderWolves 47-25 in the game, including 21 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second chance points.  The Roadrunners were also hitting from the outside, burying 8-of-15 from 3-point range.  It was the most 3-pointers since burying eight against Mesa State on Dec. 13, 2009.

Five Roadrunners scored in double digits on Friday, led by Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) with 13 bench points as she hit 3-of-6 from the outside.  Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) and Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) each had 12 points.  Bratton added seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Wood was 4-for-5 from the floor.

Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had 11 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-9 and had a career-high eight rebounds for the second straight game.  Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) also added 10 off the bench.

Metro State's bench outscored CSU-Pueblo's bench 36-12.

Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had 11 rebounds and Tawny Drexler (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) pulled down eight.  Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) had a rare cold shooting night, hitting just 1-of-10 from the floor, but dished out a career high nine assists.

CSUP came out firing, scoring on its first four possessions of the game to take a 9-3 lead.  Wood helped fight off the hot start by hitting a pair of 3-pointers and scoring Metro State's first eight points in the game.

The ThunderWolves took their final lead of the game at 21-20 with 6:47 left in the first half.  Metro State took a 35-33 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Metro State held CSUP scoreless for the first four minutes and opened the second half on an 8-0 run.

Kohn's jumper with 11:20 left put Metro State up by 11 and the Roadrunners led by double digits the rest of the game.  They led by as much as 28 points, outscoring the ThunderWolves 39-14 in the second half and holding them to just a 19.0 percent field goal percentage in the second half after shooting 51.7 percent in the first half.  Metro State outrebounded CSUP 26-8 in the second half and forced 11 turnovers.

The Roadrunners will host UC-Colorado Springs at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
