ALAMOSA, Colo. – Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) made a layup with 0.1 seconds left as No. 14 Metro State held on for a 54-53 victory at Adams State on Saturday evening. The Roadrunners improved to 16-1 overall and 12-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASC fell to 12-7 and 7-6 in the RMAC.
Metro State took a 22-13 lead with 8:36 left in the first half after
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) buried her third 3-pointer to cap a 10-0 run. The Roadrunners went into halftime with a 28-23 lead, despite shooting just 34.5 percent. Metro State forced 12 first-half turnovers.
The Roadrunners opened the second half on an 11-2 run over the first six minutes, leading 39-25. The Grizzlies took their first lead of the second half at 45-44 with 6:40 to go.
Metro State answered with an 8-2 run, capped by back-to-back jumpers by Cervantes to lead 52-47 with 2:05 left.
Vera Jo Bustos buried a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left to cut the lead to two. Following a Metro State turnover, Crystal Loch made a layup with 7.0 seconds left and drew the foul. After a timeout, she made her free throw to give ASC a 53-52 lead.
Cervantes then drove the length of the floor and finished a contested layup on the right side to win the game.
She finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting and had seven rebounds and four assists with no turnovers.
Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) also scored in double figures with 12 points. Benson's three 3-pointers in the first half accounted for all nine of her points.
Bustos led ASC with 20 points.
Metro State shot just 32.8 percent from the floor, but committed just 11 turnovers and forced 18. The Roadrunners held a 37-36 rebounding lead.
Metro State will host Western State at 5 p.m. on Friday.
