DENVER - No. 12 Metro State had 16 blocks, the most for the Roadrunners since 2008, as it swept Adams State 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 on Saturday night at home. Metro State improved to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASC fell to 14-6 and 8-4. It was the third straight win for the Roadrunners in the past three days.
Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.) tied a career high with seven total blocks, including six assists.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) was a part of six blocks and
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) were each a part of five. As a result of the strong blocking, the Grizzlies hit .000 for the match with 24 kills and 24 errors in 98 attempts.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) led Metro State offensively with 14 kills.
Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) and Heath each had seven. Kovach had five kills in eight attempts.
Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) handed out 23 assists and
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) had 14.
Defensively,
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) and Schwartzman led the team with eight digs each.
After a slow start in the first that led to a 5-4 lead for ASC, Metro State exploded for eight of the next nine points, including two runs of four in a row, to lead 12-6. The Grizzlies hit -.121 in the first set, though Metro State hit just .133.
Adams State took a 23-22 lead in the second set, before Metro State scored the final three points to win on a kill from Causseaux and then two by Morley.
The Roadrunners got off to a 9-2 lead in the third and never looked back as Phan served eight straight points. Metro State hit a match-best .400 in the final frame and ASC hit .000.
Metro State will travel to No. 24 Colorado Mines on Friday at 7 p.m.
